May 27, 2008 -- Northbound Powhite Parkway mainline toll lanes reduced by three beginning Tuesday, June 3 -- Motorists are advised to plan morning travel routes accordingly --

Motorists traveling northbound through the Powhite Parkway mainline toll plaza will experience significant morning rush hour delays beginning Tuesday, June 3, as toll lanes are reduced from nine to six lanes. The three-lane closure marks the beginning of the northbound installation of the Open Road Toll (ORT) lanes, also known as express lanes. This traffic situation is expected to last for 90 days.

To avoid delays, expressway drivers are encouraged to explore alternate routes into the City of Richmond such as Hull Street, Midlothian Turnpike, or I-95 north. In addition, drivers may want to take advantage of adjustable work schedules or flexible time through their workplace, if applicable.

The northbound express lanes installation is the final phase of the Richmond Metropolitan Authority’s ambitious program, which will significantly reduce traffic congestion on the Powhite Parkway. Upon completion, the nearly 10-year project will introduce three express lanes, in each direction, allowing E-ZPass customers to travel at 45 mph through barrier-free toll lanes. The southbound express lanes are expected to open in July, while the northbound lanes are scheduled to debut in August.

Motorists are advised to remain alert concerning all traffic shifts through local television and radio media reports.

This traffic situation will be in place for approximately eight weeks, with additional shifts occurring throughout the construction period. Drivers should remain alert and observe electronic signage, as well as posted speed limits.
